About Infertility

Infertility is defined as the failure to conceive after 12 months of unprotected intercourse. The causes of infertility are multiple, and are divided roughly into three groups. At least a third of all problems with trying to conceive are on the male side, another third caused by the female and the last third a combination of problems on both sides. Male-factor infertility describes cases in which the male partner appears to be the unique cause of failure to conceive. This is usually due to low quality semen, or the absence of spermatozoa in the ejaculate. Common causes of male factor infertiliy are varicocele.  Female factor infertility is defined when the male partner has no obvious problems with semen quality. Common female causes are endometriosis or ovulatory problems.  In a further third of cases, there are components of male-factor and female-factor infertility. Infertility is not a definite diagnosis, and there exist various grades of infertility from mild forms resolved with simple corrective techniques such as timed-intercourse, to severe grades where the best recourse is to egg or sperm donation. In some cases, infertility can be solved by a simple treatment or operation. In others, it may require in vitro fertilisation.
